The Format

Similar to MAAM's Symposium on Building Museums™, the Symposium on Creating Exhibitions™ is hosted by museums. MAAM is grateful to the Franklin Institute and the University of Pennsylvania Museum for their hospitality. Sunday April 6, the first day of formal events, will present a series of provocative (or point/counterpoint) sessions on topics relevant to the exhibition process. Monday, April 7, will present a series of practical sessions that will provide participants with resources, tools and tips to take away. The sessions on each day are loosely related, as Sunday is a day to pursue fundamental questions and challenges while Monday addresses answers and resources to meet the challenges.

EDWIN CHAN, Principal in GehryPartnersLLP & project leader at PMA.
Date
: Monday, April 7th
Time: Small reception 6:30 and lecture to start at 7:00
Location: The Great Hall of the University of the Arts, Hamilton Building, 320 South Broad Street

EDWIN CHAN:
"Gehry Draws" is produced in collaboration with Frank Gehry and his team at Gehry Partners. Project synopses and commentary by Gehry and two of his Partners and Project Designers, Edwin Chan and Craig Webb, guide us through the full range of Gehry production, from the small details of furniture design to such large-scale undertakings as the Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The drawings, illustrations, and text in Gehry Draws definitively place drawing at the heart of Frank Gehry's creative process. This book is published by The MIT Press in association with Violette Editions.

Edwin Chan joined Frank O. Gehry & Associates upon graduating from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in 1985. Since then, Mr. Chan has worked on many of the firm's most significant projects including: the Nationale-Nederlanden Building in Prague, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, and the hotel at the Marques de Riscal Winery in El Ciego, Spain. Currently Mr. Chan is a Partner of the firm, working directly with Frank Gehry on the design of a number of projects that includes an office building for Novartis International in Basel, Switzerland and the Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation in Paris, France. In addition, Mr. Chan has also designed The Art of Motorcycle Exhibition for the Guggenheim Museums in New York, Bilbao and Las Vegas, as well as the set designs for the opera Ariadne Auf Naxos by Richard Strauss in Los Angeles.

Luxembourg European Cultural Capital 2007 presents a special collaborative project by artist Sophie Calle and architects Frank Gehry and Edwin Chan. For the exhibition Frank Gehry and Edwin Chan will create a circular labyrinth using reflecting materials that highlights the emergence and fading of thoughts and memories at play in Calle's work.
